         - Homeworks will be assigned after every class and are due in one week, right before class.

  • Structure of Solids (4 classes / two weeks) Lecturer: Jian-Hao Chen
         - Basic crystal structure: Bravais lattice, Miller indices etc.
         - Diffraction and reciprocal lattices.
         - Lattice symmetry.
         - Crystal Binding.

  • Electronic band structure (4 classes / two weeks) Lecturer: Xiong-Jun Liu
         - Band theory: Bloch theorem, Bloch functions and Bloch dynamics.
         - Electron gas: non-interacting electron gas, nearly free electron gas, interacting electron gas.
         - Tight-binding approximation, spin-orbit coupling, metal, insulator, semimetal.

  • Semiclassical Transport (6 classes / three weeks) Lecturer: Jian-Hao Chen
         - Wave packet dynamics, Equation of motion, anomalous velocity.
         - Boltzmann equation.
         - Berry phase and Hall effect.
         - Impurity scattering, Localization.

  • Lattice Dynamics (6 classes / three weeks) Lecturer: Jian-Hao Chen
         - Classical Harmonic oscillators, 1D atomics chains.

         - Phenomenology and Ginzburg–Landau theory.
         - Coopper instability.
         - Intro to BCS theory.
